‘You shall love (agapēseis) your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love (agapāte) your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you?
Agape, this is supposed to be the kind of love that God has for all of us. I was told that this kind of love is the greatest form of love that exists and that is what Christians should have one for another. The thing is that that is all well and great and stuff but what is exactly is it? What is agape though, what does it mean to love like that?
I have always thought that it is to exhibit love unconditionally but it is much more than that. They say that God doesn’t just love but this God of ours IS love. I love the fact that God loves us all like that. No judgment, regardless of what most Christians have to say about God’s judgment and how hell is waiting for those that reject God.
This is what Jesus, God’s Son had to say about it:
You have heard that it was said,
— Matthew 5:43-46, RSV
This God of ours is a giver, our Heavenly Father is real, He loves without condition. Did you see where Jesus said that His Father makes the sun rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust. He even asked the question, “if you love those who love you, what reward have you?” What reward is it to love only what you want to love? We need to remember that agape love, translated as charity in the Bible, is all about giving.
Our Heavenly Father has a big heart. I do not know what God looks like, a lot of people think that God is an old white guy with a beard who rules everything with an iron fist. I feel like this God is not even human and has no body of any kind. God is a spirit and has never been seen but God exists in all of us. Jesus came to show us that God came to live within us. He said that the kingdom of God is within us. We are all His and it doesn’t matter if you believe in Him or not, you are His.
No one is going to send you to hell, our Heavenly Father is not like that, it is just not in His giving nature to do something like that to billions of His own. Why would He force eternal punishment on His very own? Remember, we are part of who He is. His Spirit resides within each and every one of us and the Good News is this: Our Heavenly Father is a giver, He punishes no one, corrects yes, punish, no. God cannot help but love because He is love. So the good news is this: our God loves us forever and His every intention is to bless each and every one of us, not because we confess His Son as Lord and Savior but because He lives in us and we carry a piece of our Heavenly Father within our very spirit. We are all the sons and daughters of this Great God. Now that is great good news that we can all celebrate.
